Deep Learning, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence are all fashionable jargon that are casually thrown around to suggest using innovative techniques in data science. When it comes to scientific research, innovative techniques alone are not enough. The real power of machine learning methods come from mastery of three complementary tasks: understanding your dataset, crafting a precise question, and applying the correct technique. As a science community we must strive to bring new techniques into our own data by asking good questions. In this talk, I will outline some initial successes using data science techniques to gain a deeper understanding of the physical processes on the sun and profile their ongoing development. I will also discuss the scientific potential of this intersection between data science and heliophysics and look forward into the emerging field of HelioAnalytics.
