Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN): Their Characteristics
and Role in Galaxy Evolution

Over the last 30 years it has become apparent that all large galaxies possess a super-massive black hole (SMBH) in their gravitational centers. The SMBH mass scales with the stellar mass in the host galaxy's bulge, which suggests they co-evolve. The AGN phase occurs when the SMBH is fueled, which results in the generation of massive winds or relativistic jets, which are believed to be the mechanism that creates the SMBH/bulge mass relationship. I will discuss the
various classes of AGN and how AGN feedback may play a critical role in galaxy evolution.
